He married Janet Atchison,<ref name=":0" /> the daughter of a merchant, Mathew Atchison, of Glasgow.

They had seven children: Thomas and Patrick, the two sons, both died young, and two of their daughters died unmarried.

Throughout life Robert had certainly been of a spare and active habit of body. His visage was long, the forehead being high and narrow, with singularly hollow temples. His hair was of a sandy fair colour, still pretty full, and perfectly free from greyness. In every feeling and habit of mind. Robert is best described by a noted historian as: "A TRUE SCOTTISH BARON OF THE GENUINE AGE OF BARONAGE"<ref>{{Cite book|last=Paterson|first=James|title=History of the counties of Ayr and Wigton|publisher=|year=1866|isbn=|location=|pages=357}}</ref>
