Robert Hunter Caldwell |
Robert Caldwell Hunter (b. 1799) was a chief of Clan Hunter.<ref name=":0">"FamilySearch".</ref><ref>Shaw, M.S (1925). Some Family Papers of the Hunters of Hunterston. Scottish Records Office. p. 76.</ref> Robert was the eldest son to Robert Hunter Caldwell, and he continued with the good work started by his father. He enlarged the new mansion house, which had been built in the Georgian style in 1799, and drained large areas of marshland on the estate to create some of the finest arable farming land in the west of Britain<ref>Close, Riches, Rob, Anne (2012). He married Christian Macknight Crawford in 1836,<ref name=":0" /> and was an Advocate and Justice of the Peace and an important local figure. Robert died in 1880,<ref name=":0" /> leaving two daughters, Jane and Eleonora, but no sons.
After his mothers death (Eleonora Hunter) in 24 December 1851<ref name=":0" /> he took over as laird of Hunterston and became the new Clan Hunter<ref>Scottish Clan Family Encyclopedia. Collins. pp. 172–173.</ref> 25th Chief in 1852.
