A popular landmark was what is called “ the Greasy Pole “situated on the North Shore, a few hundred yards north of where the ShellMex Depot stood.  It was here at 2.52am GMT on the 12th December 1921 thatthe first successful 

amateur transatlantic short wave radio transmissionfrom the USA ( Greenwich, Connecticut ) was received.
