Scottish Records Office.</ref> was a chief of Clan Hunter.<ref>Scottish_Clan_Family_Encyclopedia. Collins. pp. 172–173.</ref> Born in 1613, he became the 20th Chief in 1665 after his father's death.
He was married twice, first to Elizabeth Crawford in 1635<ref name=":0" /> and second to Marian Cunninghame, on 7 December 1658<ref name=":0" /> and had 4 children with his first wife and 2 with his second.

Robert entered Glasgow University at the age of 14 in 1627. He was succeeded by his eldest son, Robert Hunter of Hunterston<ref name=":1" />, or of that Ilk, who is designed "younger of Hunterston" in the "Roole of the Remonstrators," in 1650, as well as in a charter dated 19th November, 1658, by Richard. Lord Protector of the Comm.
