Hunterston is a small hamlet comprising of a farm, castle and mansion house that dates back to the 12th century. Over the years it has suffered compulsory purchases of land and its now home to many industrial developments, that being two nuclear power stations, an oilrig construction yard, wind turbine test facility and an AC/DV Electrictity Convertor Station.

Although the deep sea port is called Hunterston it is actually in the village of fairlie, and no access to the site is available from Hunterston.

Through the estate of Hunterston runs the U35 Road and two roads that facilitate the industrial developments that being Oilrig Road and Power Station Road

It is accessed via the main A78 trunk road.

The original old coach road went through Hunterston well before the A78 was built. It started at the Highthorn Turnpike and made its way through Hunterston Estate, past the castle then onto land call Poteath, which is now the site of the Coal Port, before it joined with the road to Fairlie.
