Route outline (key)
9 Belfast - Slieve Gullion

NCN Route 9 runs from the Queen Elizabeth Bridge in Belfast to Slieve Gullion, south of Newry. It is planned to take the route across the border all the way to Dublin.

Route[edit]

Beginning at NCN93 near Belfast city centre, NCN9 heads south down the west bank of the river Lagan, following the river, or close enough, to south of Lisburn city centre, near Sprucefield. It then heads along Blaris Road and other minor roads, meandering along the M1 to Lough Neagh, where the NCN94 is met. A short spur of NCN9 heads to the Lough Neagh Discovery and Conference Centre.

From the spur, the cycle route heads down into Craigavon, using part of the B2. NCN9 goes through the centre of Craigavon, whereas NCN94 avoids the town centre going in a long loop via the Lough. At Portadown, after heading along bits of the A27 and A50, NCN94 heads north, and we head south along the Newry Canal towpath.

Just south of Portadown (and at Scarva), NCN91 heads west to Armagh and Enniskillen. NCN9 follows the Newry Canal all the way to the edge of Newry city centre. There is a spur penetrating the city centre, but the main route south heads out north along the Armagh Road. Minor roads are then used to reach the border, via Camlough to Slieve Gullion.
